The Power of a Powerful Team

A powerful team is not made up of people who think alike. It is made up of people who learn how to work well together—even when they see the world differently.

Today, our workplaces may include several generations working side by side. Each generation brings different experiences, expectations, communication styles, strengths, and ideas about what work should look like. That diversity can create frustration—or it can become one of a team's greatest advantages.

The difference often comes down to three things: patience, listening, and understanding.

Patience gives people room to learn from one another. Listening tells someone, You matter enough for me to hear you. Understanding allows us to stop judging a different approach and become curious about what we might learn from it.

The most experienced person in the room has wisdom to share. The newest person may see possibilities everyone else has stopped noticing. One person brings history. Another brings innovation. One understands what has worked. Another asks, What if we tried something different?

We don't become stronger by making everyone think like us. We become stronger by learning how to think together.

Great leaders create environments where every generation has something to teach—and something to learn.

So the next time someone on your team approaches something differently than you would, don't immediately correct them.

Get curious.

Listen.

Ask a question.

You may discover that the person who sees things differently is exactly the person your team needs.
